Biography

Singing

Elizabeth Byrum Linnartz, lyric soprano, has soloed with many Triangle groups such as the Durham Children’s Choir, the Duke Chapel’s annual Messiah, the Duke Chorale and Orchestra, the Durham Choral Society, Chapel Hill Community Chorus (now Voices),  Concert Singers of Cary, Triangle Bach Consort, the North Carolina Bach Festival, and St. Stephens Chamber Orchestra. She has presented lecture recitals through Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts in partnership with Duke Divinity School. She soloed with Oberlin Conservatory’s Baroque Performance Institute and in locales as far-reaching as Finland, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and in solo recitals at Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, Elon University, and NC A&T.  An actual Triangle native, she grew up in Raleigh, taught in Chapel Hill, and raised her five children in Durham.

Education

Elizabeth Linnartz holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she received a Hayes Fellowship, a PEO Scholar award, and admission to  Pi Kappa Lambda. She received a B.A. in Music magna cum laude from Duke University. She studied voice with Charles Lynam, Carla LeFevre, and Liz Daniels.

Teaching

Dr. Linnartz teaches at Duke University since 2004 and has had a large private studio since 1997.  She gives master classes and workshops for church, civic, high school, and a cappella choirs.  She is a member and former board member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) North Carolina Chapter and Mid-Atlantic Region.  She previously taught at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Greensboro, Columbia International University, and Institut Injil Indonesia in Batu, East Java.

Students

Dr. Linnartz’s graduate audition prep students have been admitted into graduate voice programs such as Manhattan School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, New England Conservatory, Florida State at Tallahassee, Boston Conservatory, Northwestern, Boston University, UNC Greensboro School of Music, University of South Carolina School of Music, University of Denver and Cincinnati Conservatory, with a variety of assistantships, tuitions wavers, and stipends.

While studying with Dr. Linnartz, high school students have been admitted to undergraduate voice programs at Eastman, Peabody, Oberlin Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, University of Michigan (classical and musical theater), UNC Greensboro School of Music, University of SC School of Music, St. Olaf’s, Furman, Valparaiso, Salem College, UNC-Chapel Hill, East Carolina, Appalachian (music and music therapy), Wingate, Greensboro College, and Meredith, with a variety of music and voice scholarships.

High school students have been admitted summer programs such as Schmidt Vocal Institute, Brevard, Oberlin in Italy, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Operafest at Martha’s Vineyard,  North Carolina Governor’s School, and Playmakers Summer Youth Conservatory.

Mentoring

Many Linnartz students now teach voice, including Ivy Zhou, Sarah Love Taylor, Ginger Jones, Jesse Darden, Dena Byers, Dana Gorzelany-Mostak, Dana Harrison, Theodora Mason, Christy Bischoff, Sara Oettinger, and Colleen Walsh.
